Producer Notes

1448 is the altitude of Jeff Runquist’s small family winery in the foothills of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains.

The success and popularity of the ‘1448’ has created a demand for this wine that has outgrown Jeff’s ability to produce it solely from the surpluses of his varietal wine program.

Beginning with the 2011 vintage and continuing with the 2014, Jeff selected a number of some of his favorite vineyards to deliver fruit with an eye to making the  1448.

Jeff has always enjoyed working with Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot and so these grapes establish the framework for the 2014 wine. To it Jeff included a wonderful addition to the blend: Tannat.

The structure and depth of this variety add welcomed intensity. Also, Jeff included small quantities of Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Charbono, Zinfandel, Barbera and Syrah. Aged in French oak, the fruit-forward flavors, barrel-aged texture and depth, and rich smooth tannins, remain hallmarks of this wine.

The 2014 1448 has a deep, dark color with mature hues. The aromas lead with blue and black fruits, most notably black raspberry. The bouquet features sweet vanilla and hazelnut scents.  The flavors are big and dense, with plenty of deeply concentrated ripe fruit framed with smoky deeply toasted oak. The succulent fruits flavors flow into a smoky toasted oak background. Our house style is noted for mature tannins and this wine has plenty; enough that a bit more time in the bottle may reward the patient with some additional complexity.

Alcohol is 13.7%
