Winemaker Notes
[Speaking about the 2009 vintage]
Named for the original 1896 plantings, our Old Patch Red has remained the all time favorite among legions of Trentadue fans for over three decades. Some of these vines are still producing today. Although the blend composition varies slightly with the vintage, the pre-Prohibition style of field blend based on Zin, Petite Sirah and Carignane remains the same. The 2009 harvest was a bit challenging with early rain in the middle of harvest. Luckily our Zins and Petites ripened earlier than the rest of the varieties and were all harvested before the rain. The season was relatively cool overall resulting in brighter fruit aromas and more elegant wines in general. In 2009 our OPR was made entirely from our estate grapes, which is a rear occurrence. The blend is predominately Zin with modest dose of Petite and Carignane resulting in very fruity and more Zin like wine than the previous vintage. The wine has a bright dark red color with intense red cherry aromas, strawberries and cherry cola as an immediate impression. With aeration nuances of brown sugar, maple and plums are showing with slight dose of oak and vanilla. On the mouth the wine is fresh and juicy with youthful brightness, finishing long and fruity. Our 2009 OPR is delicious now but it will reward you patience with 2-3 years of aging.
WineChump Notes
After my trip to Napa, last year, I learned about the tremendous range of Zinfandel. Blended with other varietals, Zinfandel becomes rich, peppery and spicy. Aging in oak improves the overall depth of the wine, and when you do what Trendadue has done with this wine, you get a winner!
