Producer Notes

Twenty-five years of making wine in South Australia has given big (6’5”) Ben ample opportunity to develop some great relationships with growers. He cherry picks grapes from some of the best vineyards in the McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Adelaide Hills.

The aim of all Mr. Riggs wines is to express the essence of the vineyard and variety or varieties, in a style that winemaker, Ben Riggs, enjoys drinking; big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance, the latter not necessarily being a trait shared by himself. Under the Mr. Riggs label the plan is to produce icon wines from icon regions.

“The Gaffer” Shiraz is a testament to the best of McLaren Vale. Made with 30% new French oak, this wine shows excellent integration of Shiraz fruit with the gentle use of oak creating a big, rich, juicy, smooth style of red, finishing with elegance and spice. “The Gaffer” is a flavorsome, fruit- driven, full-bodied Shiraz that is well balanced and assured to please the palate.

The wine is named in honor of John “The Gaffer” Riggs (1814-1902), the great-great-great grandfather of winemaker Ben Riggs, this McLaren Vale blended Shiraz was made to acknowledge 150 years of the Riggs family’s rich farming heritage in South Australia.

Note the touch of PINK -The simple black and white packaging has been given a splash of color. Beginning with the 2006 vintage in Australia, and globally with the 2007 vintage, a total of $50,000 has been donated to the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation (FMCF) and their fight against breast cancer. The donated funds have helped the FMCF secure a worldwide breast cancer patent and assisted in raising a little awareness for the cause along the way.
